what is networking in computer science

On a single LAN, computers and servers can be connected by cable or wirelessly. Wireless access points (WAP) provide wireless access to a wired network. These WAP devices provide a bridge between computers and networks. A typical WAP could have a theoretical capacity to connect hundreds or even thousands of wireless users to a network, although the practical capacity can be much less.

Cable servers will almost always be connected to the network because cable connections remain the fastest. Stationary workstations (desktops) are also usually wired to the network, although the cost of wireless interfaces has fallen to the point that it is easier and cheaper to use a wireless connection when installing workstations in an existing facility with inadequate wiring.
