Once upon a time, home networks were mostly home networks - most households didn’t need it or couldn’t afford more than one computer. Now, in addition to computers, they use them for email, people also use them for homework, shopping, instant messaging, downloading music and videos, and playing games. For many families, one computer is not enough to visit. In a multi-computer home, a home network is often essential as a technical toy.
